Available rebates
Hybrid heat pump water heaters (HPWH)
- Up to 3x more efficient than standard electric models.
- Can help save your customers hundreds in energy costs each year.
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions.
- Act as energy storage by preheating water during low-demand periods.
Requirements:
- Residential customers must have an active electric account with SDG&E®, SCE® or PG&E®.
- Must replace an existing natural gas storage water heater (propane units do not qualify). Applies only to fuel substitution.
Rebate amounts – contact a participating distributor for the most current rebate amounts.

240V Heat Pump Water Heaters replacing existing natural gas storage (Fuel Substitution HPWH):
- 240V HPWH <45 gal, UEF = 3.30, replacing storage natural gas water heater, 40 gal
- 240V HPWH >45 to <=55 gal, UEF = 3.30, replacing storage natural gas water heater, 30-40 gal
- 240V HPWH >55 to <=75 gal, UEF = 3.30, replacing storage natural gas water heater, 40-50 gal
- 240V HPWH >75 gal, UEF = 3.30, replacing storage natural gas water heater, 50-75 gal
120V Heat Pump Water Heaters replacing existing natural gas storage (Fuel Substitution HPWH):
- 120V HPWH <45 gal, UEF = 3.00 replacing storage natural gas water heater, 40 gal
- 120V HPWH >45 to <=55 gal, UEF = 3.00 replacing storage natural gas water heater, 30-40 gal
- 120V HPWH >55 to <=75 gal, UEF = 3.00 replacing storage natural gas water heater, 40-50 gal
- 120V HPWH >75 gal, UEF = 3.00 replacing storage natural gas water heater, 50 gal
240V Heat Pump Water Heaters replacing electric storage:
- 240V HPWH >45 to <=55 gal, UEF = 3.30 replacing electric storage water heater, 40-50 gal
How to get started
No contractor enrollment required
- Check eligibility and submit project data.
- Fill out the intake form at goldenstaterebates.com/form or scan the QR code on the Contractor Quick Reference Guide.
- Be sure to provide the resident’s name, address, contract information, local utility, and project description.
- Note: Some wholesalers may use their own project data system linked to their account holder platform.
- Receive your promo code.
- Get your unique 5-digit promo code via email from [email protected].
- Note: promo codes are used to protect resident privacy from unauthorized third parties. Promo codes are not project pre-approvals nor reserve program funding. The distributor is responsible for filing for the program rebate.
- Present promo code.
- Show the email received with the promo code to the distributor either at point-of-sale or after purchase.
- Link the purchase to your promo code.
- Make sure the distributor records the product model and serial number with your promo code.
Incentive timing and processing
Purchases must be made January 1, 2026 or later.
Incentives are passed to distributors, who may apply them as:
- A discount at point-of-sale
- A store credit or check after verification
Contractors/installers must review and share customer program notification before installation. Additional rebate opportunities are available through The Switch Is On.
